Nacido en San Jose, California, perteneciente a una familia inmersa en el mundo escenico, sus primeros pasos en este universo los da como actor sobre un escenario. En Holly wood, ya en 1915, pasa por Essenay, Mutual y Triangle co mo especialista y actor, antes de convertirse en guionista y director a las ordenes de Mack Sennett. En 1925 pasa a Warner Bros, donde desarrollara la ma yor y mejor parte de su carrera como director, que incluye los dos musicales citados. En 1944 pasa a la Fox, y a partir de 1948 alterna con otras productoras.
